I’m a very proud Playstation 4 owner. I purchased it the on the day of the launch on November 15th. Luckily, I didn’t have to evade any kind muggers and sinister looking thugs with aluminum baseball bats and ski masks, or so I’ve read. I preordered my PS4 on my bday back in June and patiently waited for 5 months. I’ve had every Playstation with the exception of the very first Playstation. I am proud to say that it’s my preference and my console of choice.
First and foremost however, I am A hardcore/competitive gamer. That above all else is who I am. That’s what I am. So make no mistake about it, I’m the guy on your headset that yells out “You Camper!” if you beat me in a shootout. Hell, it doesn’t even have to be a shootout, you can knife me in the back following me and I’ll still call you a camper. I’m the guy that rubs it in your face when I score a TD and continues to shoot 3’s, well aware, that I’m kicking your candy ass already by 30 points in a basketball game. Yes, I’m that asshole.
Before I layout all my thoughts and opinions. Know that I’m a gamer. If you own a Xbox One or 360 or an Atari, know that I don’t see you as lame. Or think of you that way. I see you as a fellow gamer.
Sadly, that’s not how everyone sees it. A lot of Xbox 360 users would look down towards me thinking since I was a PS3 user that I wasn’t serious or I sucked as if I was inferior by owning a different piece of hardware. Let me reveal something else to you, I own a 360. All of the things I’ve done on PS3 on online multiplayers, is exactly what I’ve done on the 360. I’ve laid people face down like a gym full of 7th graders doing push-ups in Call of Duty and Battlefield. 2K and Madden as well. I always thought that was foolish. Just immature pride is what I label it.
Unfortunately I see the same things happening with this new generation of consoles hitting the market. I understand why people have chosen sides. Cause it is what it is. It’s a war. It’s a console war. Like any other war, you pick your sides. I do think it’s admirable that people are so loyal to a brand. I mean you have to be if you invested time and money into it you know? There’s nothing wrong with that, just know there maybe two different fan bases but we all fall under the same canopy/umbrella of being… Gamers.
My personal opinion. I believe Sony will win the console wars. Well, numbers wise at least in terms of sales. I’m not even being biased. This is facts. Microsoft is popular in one region and that’s North America. The fact Sony has sold over a million in a region that’s not even their money maker/bread and butter is amazing. The UK and Europe as well Japan is where sales really soar. It hasn’t even hit that market yet. That’s amazing. Also, it’s kind of misleading in terms of numbers. When it comes to sales you also must factor in profit margin. Yes, the PS4 maybe cheaper than the Xbox One but I believe Microsoft will do alright. See… They’re not losing a whole lot of money on the Xbox one like Sony is on the PS4. This is how it works… If the PS4 costs say $700-800 to make and you’re selling it for $399. How is that winning? Lol you sell a million of those in one week and guess what you’ve made? A financial loss. The only people who won was us, the gamers. I knew they were taking a loss until I walked into every Target and Best Buy and they were sold out on games for it. Sony and Microsoft knows what they’re doing. They’re gonna take a loss for now and make up for it in software sales for their respectful systems. Microsoft just didn’t want their product to be less than what it’s worth. As consumers we think they’re ripping us off, yet they’re not. They’re taking a loss.
I’m not writing to bash the Xbox One. I don’t have an Xbox One. So I don’t have an opinion on it. I’m not one of those people who bash something that they’ve never tried. I’m actually quite envious of the X1. The fact it DOES have a built in camera with the Kinect 2.0 and how you can talk to it and tell it phrases I think is genius. How you can switch between live TV. And how they made improvements to the Xbox controller, which let’s be realistic here. That controller was the gold standard of all controllers. The 360 controller had the best feel to any controller I had held before I put the DualShock 4 into my palms.
I am pleased to say that this Dual shock 4 is perhaps the best controller I have ever held now. The blue light at the top of the controller is so cool and innovative. It changes color in certain games such as Killzone: Shadow Fall where your player maybe taking damage and it will turn red to signify you’re low on health or green to show you you’re healthy. That’s something I’ve never would’ve thought of. Or marking which # controller you have by color. Blue being 1st player. Red as 2nd player, green as 3rd and pink as 4th player. I love how it now uses a micro USB plug so it can now hook up to tablets and your cell phones now. The analog sticks are further apart so your thumbs won’t touch. The built in mic in the center of the controller. How you can plug a headset into your controller (which was first done by the 360 I might add.) yet they took it one step further where audio headphones can be plugged in so you can hear your game. No longer turning down the TV at night lol. There’s just so many things to like about the DualShock 4.
The graphics on the PS4 is amazing. All running off of 1080i on your TV. The hardware advantage does go to Sony. The 8GB of GDDR5 RAMwhich allows it to be faster than the GDDR3 RAM used by Microsoft is the biggest noticeable difference in terms of hardware specs. I think it’s an advantage but not a deal breaker at all. Both systems are gonna look great but Sony has the upper hand when it comes to long term because developers are gonna be able to push further with the graphics when their game is released on the PS4.
The interface on the PS4 was the most noticeable thing I noticed. Gone is the days where you can download themes and now replaced by this social network blue color. Well that’s what I call it at least. It looks like a social networking site which is soooooo cool. It does a great job with keeping in touch with your friends and showing what they’ve been playing and what trophies they unlocked and who befriended them and if you might know them as well. I really love how they did that.
Everything from the sleekish/modern design to the light that streams all the way across the top of the console that also changes color. It streams blue when you first turn it on. White as it stays on and orange when on standby and red when overheating. It’s beautiful to see.
Also like the Xbox, you can talk to your PS4 through the controller or headset. In the menus you can direct it where you want want it to go. Music Unlimited? No problem. Just give it the word and it’ll highlight what you just said. The only thing I wish it had was more phrases you can say like the Xbox One. Other than that, it’s not so different from it believe it or not. It may sound weird coming from a Sony head as myself but I’m actually really proud of Microsoft. People forget that Microsoft lost 4 billion dollars with their very first console that debuted back in 2001. They ditched their first console to better their product after only four years in the market and came out with their successor in the 360. Which started off slow but became one of the all time greatest consoles in my opinion. It just wasn’t my cup of tea though. Their online services was better than the PS3. As for now, I don’t think either one has the upper hand. Sony has improved their online service and their 1st party lineup looks impressive. For Sony fans, be patient. Order 1886 and Infamous: Second Son is on it’s way. Xbox fans have a lot to look forward to as well with Titanfall and Halo on the horizon. It’s a great time to be a gamer. Let us not forget that. It’s always a great time when you have a great console that comes along. We’re lucky to have two good ones. That’s… why we all win.
